Note on DevanagariThis means that Sanskrit was published not only in the Devanagari script but also in the scripts of other languages, the native languages of prospective Sanskrit students; e.g. romanised (like English), Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada, etc, so that students were not faced with the hurdle of an unfamiliar script when wanting to practise the spoken language. It should be noted here that the Devanagari script has NOT always been THE script for writing Sanskrit, a tradition which began only in the 19th century. Prior to that other Indian scripts were also used for writing Sanskrit. Predecessors of Devanagari:
